I had some sort of strange anxiety about writing this review – how could I convey the magic of my holy grail foundation? What if my vocabulary fails me? What if this becomes a novel in which I confuse the crap out of everyone? Beauty-blogger-first-world-problems (BBFWP).

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk was my holy grail foundation for yonks… until I discovered Armani Lasting Silk. I’ve been using the latter religiously for three years and I think it’s perfect in almost every way, the fact that I continue to try other options is a matter of insanity.

What sets Armani bases apart from other foundations is that they’ve perfected the concept of light bouncing pigment. I don’t pretend to fully understand the science behind it but all I can say is: these offer that soft focus, imperfection-blurring effect that is so sought after. The exception is Maestro, which entirely missed the boat (my boat, anyway).

I figured it would be a good idea to compare Lasting and Luminous because they’re both awesome but hopefully, this would provide some clarity as to why I’ve found Lasting Silk to be awesome-er. I figure, after three years, I’m finally qualified to write this review.

These photos were taken in natural (and notoriously unflattering) daylight with no flash, no primer, no powder and no concealer.

Before
Observe: problem areas around the nose and apples of the cheeks, where we can see some localised redness. Do your best not to observe: any bruising around the eye.

After
Lasting Silk on your the left half, Luminous Silk on the right half. Can you detect a difference? We’ll discuss it more later.

Luminous Silk

Perhaps the most raved about Armani product- this can be classified as an oil free yet dewy finish foundation. Coverage can be sheered out to almost nothing or built up to a fuller medium.

The soft-focus quality I spoke about earlier? This has it, that’s what initially drew me in.

The texture is a slippery liquid, a sure sign of a silicone heavy formula. Hence, if your skin is sensitive to silicones, both Luminous and Lasting are going to wreak havoc. This silicone additive allows Luminous to glide on, concealing minor textural issues and omitting the need for a primer. I hate the term ‘built-in-primer’ (hello marketing) but I guess it sort of functions that way, as most primers are comprised of silicone.

I am normal-skinned and have found that Luminous Silk lasts a full 15 hours without a setting powder, no unsightly melting around the face. If your skin is more combination to oily, I predict that you will have longevity issues.

Armani foundation shades work like this: full numbers are more neutral and 0.5 shades tend to be warmer. I own Luminous Silk in shade #5 and while it is a decent match, I would prefer a slightly more yellow undertone (for reference, I believe I’m somewhere between an NC20-25 but don’t quote me on that).

One final note on Luminous Silk- it photographs beautifully. I once worked with an incredible makeup artist who specialised in television makeup and she claimed that nothing photographed better. Something about the way it diffuses light, she said. Damn straight.

Armani Lasting Silk UV

Oh boy, where do I start. It’s some sort of perfect unicorn, y’know? The end.
No, I kid.

While Luminous Silk is veers on dewy, Lasting has a distinct satin finish. I hear some people refer to this as matte and I disagree, it never appears flat or dull.

I’m back with that vague ‘blurring’ buzzword again, as it is even more pronounced in the Lasting formulation – it makes my skin look soft and supple and almost angelic (maybe I’m getting carried away here but you get the gist).

Lasting Silk offers a tad more coverage than Luminous but still within the medium range, any blemishes require a concealer and my irksome rosiness still peaks through, somewhat. Let’s zoom in on that before and after, to get a better idea of the coverage Lasting provides.

Lasting also has a silicone heavy formula (as discussed above) to create the illusion of pore-less-ness. Neither foundation accentuates the mild flakiness that I occasionally suffer (Mandelic Peel… looking at you).

Both formulations are oil-free but include alcohol and fragrance. Thankfully, I’ve had no issues, I assume the silicone acts as an occlusive to keep things hydrated, but ultra sensitive skins be warned.

Shall we address the ‘Lasting’ element? I rarely set this foundation with powder (don’t want to dull the beautiful) and it never moves. Although it has superior longevity than Luminous Silk, oilier skintypes will still crave a blot and powder at some point throughout the day.

My summer shade is #5.5 which, as expected, leans warm. Shade matches between Luminous and Lasting Silk do not perfectly correspond and this is where things get tricky- this is my ONLY beef with Lasting Silk: the spf 15 can be deceiving as it applies quite a bit lighter and deepens within the first 5 minutes. I strongly recommend wearing it for an hour before committing to a shade, just to be sure that you don’t end up with some surprise oompa loompa disaster.

The SPF does produce a minor flashback (not visible in our non-flash photos) – it’s nothing major but worth noting. If I were doing my makeup for my wedding (not that I’m getting married, Dad, calm your farm), I’d reach for Luminous because I’m entirely confident that it pictures true. For other 99.99% of the time, I’m partial to Lasting (this may shock you but I generally shun photography unless it’s for some greater good, ie: makeup blogging).

Application wise, I apply both these foundations with my fingers, using a rolling and dabbing motion. I enjoy the tactile experience and greater control, but I’ve used all sorts of brushes and everything worked well. The BeautyBlender doesn’t do the foundation justice, but that’s really a matter of preference.

Final Verdict- In the instance that my wordiness has you seeing stars…
Lasting Silk triumphs over Luminous Silk for me because; I generally prefer a satin finish (the happy medium) and the enhanced DARN blurring effect. Pores, see ya later. In instances where I must endure flash photography, Luminous Silk takes the cake.

Both foundations are housed in a 1oz bottle with a pump, because companies producing foundations sans pumps are behind the times and it’s freaking irritating and get your sh*t together.

Fellow Aussies, Armani foundations are available at David Jones for $90AUD. Pricy, yes, but I was on the same bottle of Lasting Silk for almost three years (and I used it about 4 times a week). Not bad, eh?

If Armani ever discontinues either of these foundations, there will be rage. I will egg houses. I’m serious.

If you follow me on instagram, you’ll know that I had eye surgery a few days back (let’s not get into it, some of you may be eating). The doctor mentioned casually, in passing, that any makeup near the eyes is to be avoided for a month.

I nodded. Of course. Easy. No worries doc, we’re eye to eye on the matter.

At this point I’m nodding excessively and alarm bells are ringing. Eye makeup is my favourite. I’d give up chocolate for eye makeup. A month is a long time, yo! Still nodding away.

I took it as a challenge. This month is lip product month, beginning with corally-pinks and pinky-corals (vague, because that’s how I roll). Lip swatches were taken a while back so include eyeshadow and whatnot but upcoming looks will be about the lips, sans eye makeup. I will probably look absurd, but humour me?

Easier to wear than pinks, more flattering than orange and fantabulous on every skintone- behold, corally-pinks-pinky-corals.

Strangely, these swatch rather similarly but transform into vastly different shades on my pigmented lips. Formulas range from chalk to cheese but one commonality exists- all are shimmer free.

Burberry Lip Velvet – Honeysuckle 305

Admittedly trivial, I love the twisty magnetic close. Part of the Burberry’s matte lipstick line, Honeysuckle is a somewhat muted, warm coral (which leans more on the orange side of the coral spectrum). Given that my lips are not in the best condition, I can confirm that Honeysuckle is one of the better matte formulas I own as it doesn’t draw attention to flakiness.

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet – La Favorite

Going out on a limb here, La Favorite might be my favourite bright lipstick shade of all time. The colour is just…spot on. The perfect blend of pink and coral, it has a delicate white base to lend an almost neon quality AND it’s totally face brightening.
Now you’re disgruntled, because this was limited edition from Chanel Spring. Don’t be. It tears me apart to say this but the formula is one of the worst I’ve tried (in terms of highlighting lip texture). Full disclosure: I do have really chapped lips right now.
I’m trying to layer and lipbalm and all that jazz, it’s not been particularly fruitful.
But I’ll never give up trying.

Burberry Lip Cover – Primrose Hill Pink

A brightened warm pink, this is probably the pinkest in our coral collection today. Quite similar to Burberry Honeysuckle but with a dewy formula, a little sheerer and more on the pink spectrum (so really…not all that similar). Primrose Hill Pink and I have been well acquainted lately; the shade is effortlessly pretty, never looks as though you’re trying too hard and the formula is balmy and comfortable. An absolute pleasure to wear and I’d recommend it for most skin tones.

Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait – Colere

A bright, coral-red with pinkened undertones. A little out of place in this comparison but an honorary mention, because beautiful things deserve praise. A lipstick in liquid form, Colere has a satin finish and the best DANGNABBIT formula that I’ve ever come across in a lipstick. Even when my anxiety-induced-lip-rubbing-tendency is at its peak, Colere creates a veil that disguises my gravel lips. It’s bloody pigmented so I make an absolute mess of myself in the absence of a lip brush, but the extra effort is well worthwhile. Fo’ serious, I’m collecting every shade in the Rouge G L’Extrait line.

MAC Amplified Lipstick – Vegas Volt

An orange coral on most, this seems to pull more pink on me (but my skin could make blue look pink, it’s crazy). This shade reminds me of spring- it has a pastel quality that stems from a white base. A good introductory shade for those new to corals.

Face constants:
Armani Lasting Silk, Guerlain Four Seasons Bronzer 05 Moyen Brunettes
SUQQU Balancing Brow Powder in Moss Green
Urban Decay Naked, Buck and Toasted on the eyes. MSH Labo Love Liner. Guerlain Noir G Mascara.

Any suggestions for the next lipstick centric post? Hot pinks, maybe?

About a month ago, I decided enough is enough. I’m gritting my teeth and enduring the waiting game known as ‘growing out the brows’. Currently I look like a member of the opposite sex but I DUN CURR, I am on a mission to Cara Delevingne-esque brows (I’m aiming for the stars, mmkay?)

As you may have gathered from my incessant posting about SUQQU Liquid Brow Pen, I am a huge fan- in almost every look, I’m wearing the 02 Brown shade. I took a leap of faith (but mostly insatiable curiosity) and purchased 01 Moss Green, despite the daunting name.

More about shade comparisons later, let’s discuss the pen itself…

SUQQU Brow Pen has a super fine, brush-like applicator, it is not a felt tip pen. It dispenses a soft, watercolour ink and is best applied using feather light strokes in the direction of hair growth. Perfect for those gifted with decent brows as well as those of us who require more work (errrybody, really), the pen produces realistic looking hairs as opposed to a block of colour.

Personally, I avoid using this in the innermost portion of my brow as even the lightest hand gives a patchy or blunt appearance- sometimes I use a bit of brow powder to ease the transition but mostly I leave it be.

My Brown 02 pen refused to die, we were best mates for well over a year, which makes the price tag easier to swallow. Best 11 cents/day that I’ve ever spent.

The only con I can gather is that it is seriously long wearing- sweat proof, swim proof and hurricane proof. I can’t even… this gives my oil cleanser a run for the money so if you struggle with longevity, this aspect will blow you away.

SUQQU Brow Pen is available in two shades, 02 Brown (a medium, neutral brown) and 01 Moss Green, which is slightly deeper and contrary to the description, a cool greyed tone (so much so that the former appears blatantly warm in comparison).

If your hair is quite warm or you’re a blonde, I’d point you in the direction of 02 Brown. If you’re an ashy brunette or have black brows, 01 Moss Green, no question.

I’ve found that cooler tones with very little warmth suit me best, so I prefer 02. Here are some before and afters, filled in quite heavily (and into the inner third of the brows) to depict shade; Moss Green on your left and Brown on your right. Brace yourselves for the unruly disaster that I mentioned earlier…

And finally, a picture of Moss Green to illustrate how it ties in with my hair.

Yes, it’s pricy. If you’re in Japan or the UK, you can buy SUQQU in store. The rest of us poor buggers can order online at ichibankao at a premium (40USD or so) that includes postage. I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it; I blame Lisa Eldridge.

For the most part, I prefer white goat hair for crease brushes (click here for that segment) because sometimes, dark bristles are le floppy. Spoiler: I really should trust my instincts.

I’m reviewing the Hakuhodo G5522 and G5533 today, here is how they compare to some other dark bristle brushes.

Hakuhodo G5522BkSL Eye Shadow Brush Tapered

The blue squirrel version of the white J5522 reviewed earlier. A fraction larger than the MAC 224 but worlds above in quality. WTH MAC? Why a scratchy brush?
Like the MAC 224, this is a tapered, largeish crease brush- many may find this to be too large. Best for blending out edges as opposed to placing colour but it could also be used to blend out under eye concealer (many use the 224 for this purpose, despite the fact that it is not synthetic).

In short, if you like the 224, this brush is similar but so much better that drawing the comparison makes me cringe.

Final Verdict: B. Large for crease purposes but a great blending aid. One of the softest crease brushes I own and a pleasure to use.

Hakuhodo G5533BkSL Eye Shadow Brush Round

Undoubtedly the softest eye brush I have ever encountered. Alas, what G5533 delivers in softness is negated by its lack of resistance… behold, floppy. A not-so-dense blue squirrel creation, it may be used for soft crease colours but even then, purge worthy. I mostly employ this when doing a ‘once over’ on an eye look (to ensure that all lines are seamless) but it really shines when used for setting under eye concealer with powder, so silky… so soft…

Final Verdict: C. Pretty rubbish for eyeshadow application but if you’re searching for a luxe brush to set your under eye concealer (a must in my routine), upgrade that rating to an A.

The lowdown:

You’re looking to buy some Hakuhodo crease brushes but you have a meltdown every time you visit the site? My top 3 recommendations would be;
- J5523 (to place colour)
- J142 (slightly less dense, to blend)
- J146 (for more precise crease work, inner corner and brow highlights).

Sense a pattern? All white goat hair- always soft but never lacking in resistance. If you’re more about soft washes of colour, as opposed to definition, you may have better luck with their darker fibre varieties.

So if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that lately, my life has consisted of calculators and textbooks (and stuffing my face, naturally). I’ve taken some time out to run brushes all over my face and ramble about them… zen.

This installment compares and reviews my white goat Hakuhodo crease brushes, which hold a special place in my heart. Darker hair crease brushes in the next post.

MAC 217

Usually a mode of size and shape reference, but here is an explanation as to why the 217 is no longer my favourite eye brush. Made of white goat hair, the 217 rose to cult status due to its shape and size, which fits perfectly in most sockets. It places colour equally as well as it blends, due to non-tapered tip, this produces a somewhat flat footprint that aids in buffing harsh edges.

My beef with this brush lies not in the shape or size, but rather the quality and durability; it’s downright scratchy compared to my Hakuhodo brushes, the condition has declined despite fastidious care and it frays. Many claim that the quality of MAC brushes has been going downhill, I haven’t been around for that long so I can’t comment.

Yet I would still recommend this brush to some. Most people I encounter outside the cyber world would consider buying brushes allll the wayyy from Japan to be a form of insanity (and perhaps it is). If you’re looking for a decent crease and blending brush that is widely available, the 217 takes the cake.

For the rest of us crazy people…

Hakuhodo J5523 Eye Shadow Brush Round and Flat

This is the closest 217 dupe offered by Hakuhodo. Made of white goat hair, it takes the same shape as the 217, a round but flattened head that, on side view, creates an oval footprint. You may perceive one dissimilarity in the photos above; the size. J5523 is a fraction smaller than the 217 and this is most discernible when looking at the profile.

I actually prefer the size as it offers a tad more precision while providing the same amount of resistance. Moreover, the J5523 excels over the 217 in every facet; super soft, retains shape, never frays, durable after washing and an absolute pleasure to use.

Final Verdict: A+. If you’re looking for a better made version of the 217, here it is. If you liked the 217 but feel it is a tad large for your socket, this fits that description perfectly.

Hakuhodo J5522 Eye Shadow Brush Tapered

Again, made of white goat hair, this brush is slightly larger than the MAC 224 and the Tom Ford Blending Brush (review coming soon) and a tad less dense than the J5523. It takes a more standard crease brush form, a tapered tip with a round footprint. While it’s quite a large crease brush, the tapered tip and moderate resistance allows it to place colour in the socket but it is best suited to blending out crease shades- for this is works beautifully. It’s also soft, are you surprised?

Final Verdict: B+. I’m taking an objective stance here, some will find this brush too large for the socket and will prefer to use it solely to blend out crease shadows. That limits the versatility of the brush- if you have a bigger eye, upgrade it to an A.

Hakuhodo J142 Eye Shadow Brush Round

The size closely resembles the MAC 217/J5523 but it’s the babby version of the J5522 in terms of silhouette. I use this almost interchangeably with the J5523- I actually reach for it more frequently when using black shadow as it’s slightly less dense and building colour is infinitely easier than buffing out over application. Like all the Hakuhodo crease brushes I’ve detailed in this post, the finish of the bristles is silky and it never drags on the skin, creating perfectly diffused gradients.

Final Verdict: A. If you prefer a perfectly domed crease brush, as opposed to slightly flatter shapes like the 217, this little guy is for you. If you like a softer application in the crease, this will give a more diffused finish than the J5523. One of my favourites!

Hakuhodo J146 Eye Shadow Brush Round

Consisting of white goat hair, J146 is a more specialised crease brush. Its main purpose is precise crease work; adding a dark shade to the outer V, deepening the socket etc. Despite a slender frame, the goat hair provides a comfortable amount of resistance (because who likes a floppy crease brush? Really?)

I prefer these types of brushes to pencil style brushes for creating extra depth- I find the final product to be more diffused.

Final Verdict: B+. Not everyone needs this brush but if you yearn for a bit of black in your V (minds out of the gutter!) then J146 is my recommendation. I could grasp at straws and offer some other purposes for this brush, but it would be just that. A must for me.

What are you favourite Hakuhodo crease brushes? I’m open to suggestions :)

A little while back, I posted a haul that included a Tatcha Skincare Sampler Set. I’m fairly unadventurous with my skincare routine so I’m not sure what led to this purchase…perhaps it was due to the fact Tatcha oozes luxe, geisha-glamour? Pretty sure that was it.

I’m not going to do a full review of the sampler set because to be honest, I don’t have much to say- it was just nice.
If I had to form some opinions, I’d say the Deep Brightening Serum was lightly hydrating (albeit a minor stinging sensation upon application) and the Enriching Renewal Cream was highly hydrating (so much so that I think it wouldn’t work well under makeup). The Moisturise Rich Silk Cream was somewhere in between. Overall, I didn’t notice any effects greater than hydration although, at 22, I may not be the best judge.

So Tatcha hydration products were a meh for me, but I am impressed with their Blotting Papers (old favourites and no surprises) and their Rice Enzyme Powders. In my sampler set I received sachets of two of the three available powders; Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder and Deep Rice Enzyme Powder. I went on to purchase the Classic Rice Enzyme Powder, because there is no method to my madness.

A similar concept to the Dermalogica Microfoliant, Tatcha Rice Enzyme Powder is a fine powder that emulsifies with water to cleanse and gently exfoliate the skin. I aim to create a thin, paste-like consistency, which I massage into the skin for 30 seconds and rinse.

Some particulars on the powder; it is perfectly white, whereas the deep version is tinted green and the gentle light pink. I could only detect one dissimilarity between the three formulations- lather. Strangely, the gentle formulation has a strong lather while the deep and classic versions exhibit very little. All three had non-offensive scent and each had a similar effect on my skin.

Although Tatcha claims that there are no Sulfate Detergents in their products, there is most definitely some cleansing agent in this formulation- it leaves the skin almost squeaky clean. I know, I know… one should not desire such squeakiness but it’s somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine. Despite this, it hasn’t appeared to cause any dryness with biweekly use.

Overall effect on my skin…
My skin feels deeply cleansed and polished. A few people have commented that my skin appears to have a sheen, which I can attribute to the exfoliation benefits of this product. I notice that my skin looks brighter and any congestion issues resolved. I should mention that this will not remove makeup or sunscreen, it is primarily an exfoliant with cleansing benefits.

I’d say this product would be ideal for normal to oily skins, as the cleansing action may render dry skin types tight and uncomfortable. Those looking for a gentle exfoliant will enjoy this product.

Ingredients: Talc, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Potassium Myristate, Polyethylene, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran, Papain, Dextrin, Algae Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Glycerin, Alcohol, Hydrolyzed Conchiolin (Pearl) Protein.

Formulated without: Mineral Oil, Synthetic Colours, Synthetic Fragrances, Sulfate Detergents, Parabens, PEG’s, PPG’s, Urea, DEA, TEA or Phthalates.

Rouge Bunny Rouge recently launched their new Spring collection, Khazaria. Bold winged liner and oxblood mascara? I am all over that.

If you’ve not yet seen the whimsical and utterly enchanting Rouge Bunny Rouge collection videos, view them here and here- but be warned, it will have you lusting something serious. To view the product line up for the Khazaria collection, click here.

A few quick words on two key pieces in this look…

Raven Glaze Lacquer Liner

I always gravitate to pen style liquid liners, for ease of use and precision. Raven Glaze is no different- incredibly inky, pitch black and absolutely no dragging on the lashline. The felt tip is relatively dense and stiff, which allows for clean lines, and the tapered shape offers both thick and thin application.

For maximum impact and minimal effort (my motto!), I’ve found the best method is to lay the liner flat on the lashline and dab. Prior to application, I scribble the felt tip on the back of my hand to ensure that the product has dispersed right to the tip, this avoids the dry application often associated with felt tip liners.

Megaplumes Mascara in Oxblood Panache

I am most impressed with this product. If you peek in my closet, you’ll become aware that I am beyond obsessed with oxblood shades; jeans, shoes, satchels… I need it ALL. Can you imagine my excitement at the thought of oxblood mascara?

Oxblood Panache is a deep, jewel toned red. This sounds alarming but the shade is just deep enough to be totally wearable. The formula is also amazeballs (I’m running back to purchase the black version) as the biggish fluffy wand provides serious separation and volume.

While the Rouge Bunny Rouge Big Lash Mascara (used here) tends to be more of a lengthening product, Megaplumes really excels at volume. Did I mention that it’s oxblood?!

Onto the look! I’m no Rouge Bunny Rouge model but here is my take on Khazaria…

Product breakdown, a mix of old favourites and new favourites:
Face- Armani Lasting Silk, By Terry Touche Veloutee under eyes, Rouge Bunny Rouge Gracilis Blush*
Brows- SUQQU Brow Pen
Eyes- Rouge Bunny Rouge Chestnut Napped Apalis through the crease, Raven Glaze Liner*, Eye Kohl in Salome to tightline, Oxblood Panache Mascara*

How do you feel about bold winged liner? Or deep red mascara?
