Watch the video for my first impressions of the new Diorskin Star Foundation and see how it wore over 10 hours!

Text blurb about this foundation below the video 🙂

Nail Polish I’m wearing in this video

Glamnails Glue-On Nails by Manicare (same pair I had on in my Lip Product Addict Tag, a week and still going strong!)

Makeup I’m wearing in this video

Aside from the foundation: Tom Ford Cream Color for Eyes in Spice (limited edition, sorry!), Makeup Studio Waterproof 3D Mascara in Extra Black (once I remembered to apply it!), Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium, Stila Brow Pen in Medium & Tom Ford Lipstick in Nude Vanille. The powder that I used on my nose was Rouge Bunny Rouge Loose Powder (my favourite!).

Information about Diorskin Star Foundation

Release Date: September 2014, so any day now.

Price: 50 USD or 77 AUD.

Packaging: Glass bottle with a pump. 30ml or 1 Fluid Ounce.

Consistency: Moderately viscous, not particularly thin like Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua.

Fragrance: There is perfume in the ingredient list (which can be found at the end of this post); the scent is floral but not overpowering to my nose.

SPF: Factor of 30. I didn’t notice flashback but it wouldn’t be my first choice for flash photography as it wasn’t particularly flattering!

Shade: 020 is perhaps best suited to depth of ~NC25 with golden undertones. Keep in mind that I experienced oxidising within the first few hours of wear – this may differ depending on your skin but worth noting.

Best Application: I preferred the Beauty Blender over fingers as it offered a more skin-like finish.

Coverage: Medium plus – could be sheered out to a light coverage or easily layered for a full coverage.

Finish: Pretty stock standard satin, not matte and not dewy.

Longevity: One of the most long wearing foundations I’ve encountered; it resists migration/transfer and provides good oil control.

Final Verdict

I’m very impressed by the longevity of the Star Foundation, my base was still perfectly intact at 10 hours! I also found the coverage to be very versatile and I’m pleased that this foundation didn’t accentuate the flakiness I had going on that day.

My only complaint: upon application, traces of foundation were very visible on my skin (even my boyfriend could see it and he’s a makeup noob). At the 6 hour mark, I felt as though the foundation had melted into a more skin-like finish but that’s a long time to wait! I’m eager to mix Star with Le Blanc de Chanel, I’ll report back if it improves the finish 🙂

Overall, I’d say the Diorskin Star Foundation is best suited to combination/oily skin types seeking medium to full coverage. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

  1. I am yet to try any Dior foundations, with the original Nude on my radar these days! I am a big fan of the Nude bb creme though and I think its the best I have tried! It is completely invisible on the skin and doesn’t make me feel as if I have a layer of anything on top! Very skin like.. thats sort of made me curious to try the foundations from the brand!

  2. I really enjoyed this video! So informative and the fact that you kept it on all day with updates throughout was really fantastic. I would personally love to see more of these videos, perhaps even branching out into different products (i.e. seeing how different under eye concealers — my own biggest issue — fare throughout the day).

Anyways, great video as always! Sending love from London πŸ™‚

    1. Hey Nastassia (beautiful name, by the way!)

Interesting idea, I hadn’t thought of using this format for undereye concealers but it’s a great concept!

  3. Karima – this is an EXCELLENT review. I mean that with 100% sincerity. I wish there were reviews like this for more products of all kinds. THE MOST (i’m really obsessed with all caps today) important features for me in cosmetics is believability and longevity – loved that you provide views on both here. I heartily upvote future similar features! xoxo sj

    1. Thank you, SJ! I’m so pleased you found it helpful!

Will definitely do some more videos like these, I see myself collecting foundations like ridiculous.

  4. This is one of my favorite videos of yours, and I would absolutely love for you to do more like this! Perhaps you would consider doing some Smashbox ones?
    Xx

  5. Hi Karima,

I love this kind of blog post/video…please do more! I am on the hunt for my holy grail foundation- dewy finish (for my sad dry skin) but long lasting. Blog posts can’t always capture what the product looks like, but your real time videos do πŸ™‚

Have you tried the new, much hyped YSL foundation?

    x

    1. Hey Nellie πŸ™‚

Have you tried something luminous like Armani Luminous Silk, topped with a setting spray (I like Urban Decay All Nighter)? That way you can have the best of both worlds?

Also MAC F&B might be a good option for you, as it resists transfer (I have a review on this site, which you can search for).

I haven’t tried the new YSL foundation but to be honest, I don’t think I’ll like it. Most reviews have likened it to the Armani Maestro and that was a nightmare on my skin (also have a review of that on this blog), my skin looked as though it was shedding πŸ™

  6. Great review! Love the time lapses and updates on wear throughout the entire day. We have completely different skin but it was fun to see your take on it anyway. πŸ™‚ I’m about NC30 right now and got matched as #21 which looked a touch darker than my cheek but covered blemishes and spots really nicely. My skin is oily/combination, and without primer, this lasted about 5 hours before fading. Thinking about getting a bottle but I think it bears more testing before making that sort of commitment.

    1. Hey Liz πŸ™‚

Yeah if you’re an NC30 and matched 021, I definitely went too dark with 020 (and I’m NC20!).

It was evening and I relied on store lighting, dammit.

      x

  7. Awesome review! Super helpful video. Thank you so much for doing it.

I just got a sample in 021 today and it’s a lot more olive/cool yellow compared to 020. I’m an NC25 at the moment for ref. Can’t wait to give it a go. I like how it looked on the back of my hand, and I have very oily skin so it might work well on my me. Since summer’s on its way here I need something more tenacious than Armani Luminous Silk (my HG).

    1. Just watched the video again for application techniques and realised I forgot to ask this before: what did you put on your eyes? Looks gorgeous!

      1. I think 021 might be slightly darker than 020. I got a sample in 020 recently and it was too light for me. 021 isn’t perfect either TBH. I can’t tell whether it’s a depth problem or an undertone problem (my skin is quite olive). I’m guessing it’s a bit of both since it looks slightly ashy and ‘off’ on me.

Either way, the verdict is in: I still prefer the way Armani foundations (Luminous, Designer and Lastng) sit on my skin. The just look prettier, if you get what I mean.

  8. This is a great review. I would love to see reviews of Chanel Les Beiges Powder used as a quick foundation solution, I can’t find any good before/after shots online to depict the effect and finish it has on the skin. Or Suqqu foundations… they always look amazing. Do you know in which ways the Frame Fix Cream N version differs from the previous version?

    1. Hey Carla!

Les Beiges is similar in coverage to MAC Mineralized Skinfinish, but a little more buttery in texture. The coverage is really minimal, I probably wouldn’t wear it alone but I like it paired with concealer for rushed days.

I’m not really sure how the Frame Fix N differs from the former formulation, although I did pick up the Frame Fix Fluid N when I was in Europe!

  9. This was a wonderful review- incredibly informative and professional! I’d love to hear your perspective on the Charlotte Tilbury LightWonder foundation- it seems promising!

  10. Hi

I bought this foundation too. Maybe you should consider applying it with the sponge that comes with it. I used the sponge to apply this foundation and it gives an EXTREMELY natural look (ie: no sign of you wearing any foundation) and super light weight

    1. Hey Anzela,
I’m hesitant to purchase yet another sponge to make this foundation work, seems a bit unnecessary to me. I think it’s more likely that the foundation meshes better with your skin type!
      x

  11. Please do more videos like this! This review was exceptional. I generally loathe makeup videos/tutorials as the person usually has an annoying voice/IS annoying, or the video quality is poor. So it is incredibly refreshing to have found a blogger who is engaging, funny, thorough and informative – and a fellow Aussie! I looked at one of your first videos to compare and your more recent ‘chatty’ style videos are much more fun! Keep up the fabulous work!

  12. HI Karima, I loved this video! Have you tried any of Koh Gen Do’s foundations? I’m pretty curious about them, and I saw they have an illuminating base which seems pretty similar to Le Blanc de Chanel, so I wanted to hear your opinion!

    1. Hey Lynn,

I actually haven’t tried Koh Gen Do foundations because they’re not available in Australia! Struggle to find a decent shade match online. Sephora is coming to Australia soon so hopefully they’ll bring Koh Gen Do with them!

      x

  13. Hi Karima, Fantastic video! I am a total noob when it comes to foundations and I’m still on the look out for the “one”. Please would you review Chanel Vitalumiere (I’ve seen your very helpful review on Vitalumiere Aqua) and the By Terry Foundations?!! Thank you!!

  14. Hi Karima

Great review yet again πŸ™‚ I really love how natural you are in your videos! No humming or arring and everything’s well thought out, very informative and honest – also funny as!

Yes please to more foundation reviews =D – out of all the makeup products I buy, reviews of foundations influence my purchasing the most, so more reviews like this would be super helpful especially being in WA and ordering most of my makeup online without being able to try it in person.

As for the foundation I’m loving the longevity of it – I’m currently on the hunt for something longer lasting for the approaching spring/summer season; adding this to the shopping list!

    Bambi x

    1. Hey Bambi πŸ™‚

I actually do my best to edit out the ummm-ing and arr-ing! It irritates me to no end.
If you have a more combo to oily skin, I think this foundation might impress!

      x

  15. I really enjoyed this review. If possible, I’d like the time lapse type of review on all sorts of products (cheek, eye, etc.), as it’s really helpful to know how long they wear.

As for other foundations I’d like for you to review, I’d love to see you do Estee Lauder DoubleWear foundation!

  16. HI Karima,

I ended up buying it in shade 20, also a fraction dark but overall a really lovely and LONG wearing foundation. I am really interested to hear if you tried the Chanel blanc de blanc to lighten, and if it was successful?

    1. Hey Nellie πŸ™‚

Budge proof foundation right?! I did try mixing it with Le Blanc de Chanel and while it did lighten the shade, it also diluted the formulation and I didn’t find the longevity to be as good :-/ Bummer.

      x

  17. Thanks a lot for the review, I was looking for the ingredient list everywhere, couldn’t find it even at the Dior website, some of these high end foundations will create havoc in your skin with the amount of alcohol and irritants as in “natural” essential oils, anyhow, the perfume is down on the list so shouldn’t be a problem, I’ll test it in the heat and humidity of an NYC summer, thanks again!!

    1. Hey Alan πŸ™‚

I was surprised to find that this foundation isn’t formulated with alcohol, as most Dior foundations do include alcohol.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you end up trying it!

      x

  18. Hi Karima , great review , just need a bit of advise on which shade to choose . I’m pretty pale with Neutral undertones in Summer and more pink undertones in Winter . I’m a B10 in YSL teint Γ©clat foundation and vary between a NW15 & NW20 in MAC , which shade would you recommend in this ? I kind of like the idea of a neutral as I can work with that all year round if needed . Thanks πŸ™‚ xoxo

    1. Hey Tracey,

It sounds like your could be the lightest shade 010, but if it oxidises on you then it might read a tad dark. It looked to me as a neutral leaning cool shade.

      xx

  19. Gorgeous Karima, I want to make some petitions here if it is ok with you. I absolutely loved the format of this video and I happen to share your skin tone so it is extra helpful for me when you review base makeup πŸ™‚
I would like to know if you can review any of these four foundations, pleaseeeee:
Le Matier de Beaute Classic Flawless Finish or by Terry Sheer Expert Finish or YSL Ink Fusion or Ce dePeau Radiant Fluid Foundation. THANKS! I adore you <3

  20. Hi Karima, I bought this last week. I agree with you with regarding the oil control. I usually get shiny within 3 hours and I only saw some shine peaking through within 8 hours, not bad!

The formula is quite thick, so for dehydrated skin, I recommend putting more moisturiser. I have flaky bits around my chin and nose, so I exfoliate with a mild acid toning pad, and then moisturise more on my chin and nose and no primer on those areas.

I am matched with 20 which I am happy with. However it is more neutral and not too yellow. I am a NC20, Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk in 4.5, 20 in Chanel.

I don’t know if I can call this Holy Grail yet though because I haven’t tried many foundations! So far, I really like Lasting Silk but it does flash back and oil control is not as good as Dior Star. And Dior Star does not flash back at all!

    Thanks for your review karima!

    1. Hey Rena!

Glad you’ve had good experiences with the foundation, the longevity is incredible! I’ve continued to experiment with this foundation and for whatever reason, I can’t get it to work well on the areas around my nose. My skin is prepped adequately so I think it might be best for combo-oily skins πŸ™‚

      x

  21. Hi karima
I have tried this foundation in 030, but after 4-5hrs, I found it oxidized.
I’m about nc25-30. BA suggest me to use 022 or 030.
Should I select the lighter color than 030 or not?

  22. Hi Karima,

I really like your eyeshadow in this video, and initially thought it might be one of the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleons. How do you think the Tom Ford Cream Colour in Spice compares to, say, the Amber Haze Colour Chameleon?

    Thanks.

    1. Hey Aciel,
Tom Ford Cream Eyeshadows are totally different formulas to the Colour Chameleons. Tom Ford has a thin, mousey formula that doesn’t entirely set and leaves a glossy appearance, while the CC are densely pigmented and set to a bulletproof finish.
In terms of colour, Spice is more reddened, while Amber Haze is a more standard bronze.
      Hope this helps πŸ™‚
      x

      1. Thanks a lot. I appreciate your response.

On a separate note, would you consider writing a post about different eye lines?

      2. Sorry, I just saw your reply. I meant to say different eye liner products. For example, eyeshadow-based liners, liquid liners, gel liners, etc. I know you use something different every time, but perhaps it would be good to compare them in a single post? Thanks!

  23. Hi! How are you?
I’m thinking of buy this foundation because the shade really matches with my skin, but I wanted to know if It is a good foundation to everyday use. I don’t spend a day without use a foundation.
I’ve been using clinique’s foundation everyday for about 3 years and never had a problem with that.

    thank you

(If it isn’t good for everyday use, can you recommend me some foundation? Another one I was thinking about is clinique’s even better).

  24. Hi Karima,
Thank you for doing reviews like this . I am planning to buy a foundation and was considering between Dior Star Foundation , GA Luminous Silk & GA Lasting Silk . I saw your reviews on the GA foundations and I want the same feeling but I’m worried that it will not as long on my skin . I have oily/combination skin and I need a foundation with a medium coverage that last but still looks natural . Which would you recommend me to try ?

    Thank you again πŸ™‚

    1. Hey Aimi,
Depends on how makeup generally lasts on your skin. If you’re looking for bulletproof longevity, I think you’ll be pleased with Diorskin Star. That being said, the best option is to try get samples.
      xx
