Now I’m not one to frivolously collect skincare but I’ve learnt that one can never have too many face oils*; each oil in my collection differs from the next and I handpick an oil every night**, depending on what my skin is doing that day.

* = before you tell me that your skin produces enough oil, oily skintypes can also use oils.

** = I reserve oils for evening because when used during the day, they may encourage makeup to migrate.

These are the face oils that have made the cut and are now in frequent rotation, ordered by budget 🙂

Face Oils at Every Budget

Trilogy – Certified Organic Rosehip Oil (~17USD)*

Trilogy Rosehip was my introduction to facial oils and debatably my favourite, which goes to show that price and efficacy are not perfectly correlated.

In my mind, I was still 16 and blemish prone (in reality, I’m actually 24 and leaning dry) so I was anxious and expecting to wake up with a face full of congestion. First night… we’re in the clear. First week, brighter skin. Four months later and I hadn’t had a single blemish! Coincidence? I think not.

Now I’m a believerrrr!

Rosehip is moderately viscous and absorbs almost entirely, I actually have to apply it to a damp face or my skin soaks it up before I’ve had the chance to disperse it. Rosehip is best known for it’s ability to fade scars, unfortunately (or fortunately?) I don’t have facial scars to monitor but I did notice progressively more even skin tone.

Sadly it doesn’t smell like roses… Maybe freshly cut rosestalk.

Whip it out… Every night. It’s the dependable friend that always delivers.
Ingredients list.

Conscious Skincare – Organic Abyssinian Oil (~24USD)*

The new kid on the block, Abysinnian oil is touted as the plant-based alternative to mineral oil – similar applications sans irritations and sensitivities. Frequently described as a thin oil?! No waiiii, it’s very viscous (even when applied to damp skin) and forms an occlusive barrier that makes it ideal for retaining moisture during the colder months.

Picture this. I’ve had a long day filled with pollution, stress, sun AND sunscreen. Take off shoes, complain loudly. Thorough cleanse to remove the city soot and bus-goer grime (welcome to Sydney). Problem: today has not been kind to my skin. Solution: Abyssinian Oil, without a doubt. City dwellers can relate.

Due to the protective film, I’ve also used it as overnight treatment on the hands and feet with great success. Works wonders on cuticles, too! I won’t lie, the smell is a bit unusual (woody? Chinese medicinal tea?) but it doesn’t linger.

As far as face oils go, this one is pretty darn affordable at 16Pound.

Whip it out when… the natural skin lipids have been compromised.
Ingredient list.

Jacqueline Evans – Argan and Rosehip Oil (~40USD)*

Mostly comprised of Argan, followed by Rosehip and a dash of Frankincense for good measure. Argan has really monopolised the cosmetics market as of late, huh? I can see why: it’s lightweight, non-greasy and suitable for most skin types.

Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants to nurture the skin and address dehydration. Mature or teen, Argan is a safe bet if you’re a face oil beginner and Jaqueline Evans makes a bloody good one. Good job Jacky.

If you’ve entered a pharmacy in the past 5 years, you’ll know that Argan is also the bees knees of haircare; I’ll apply few drops to damp locks for silky, manageable hair.

Whip it out when… Summer rolls around or if you have an oilier skintype. Anytime a light face oil is in demand.
Ingredient list.

MV Skincare Skin Booster Rose Plus (~76USD)*

This one managed to escape the original shot, so here it is, in all its glory…

Face Oils at Every Budget

No compromise here – MV Rose Plus provides all the performance and all the pleasure. The smell, like diving into an olympic-sized pool of rose petals <3

A winning combination of Rose Otto, Rosehip and vitamin E, Rose Plus is of medium viscosity but absorbs quickly, very lightweight on the skin. As with all MV Skincare, ingredient lists are short and sweet (i.e: less potential for irritation) and components are the highest of quality.

Best suited for couperose skins and complexions prone to broken capillaries (HELLO, this is me), it’s magic on sporadic and unexplained redness. If any of these terms describe your skin: delicate, irritable, sensitive, flushed or high colour complexion – Rose Plus is your perfect fit.

Did I mention that this is Emma Watson’s favourite? If it’s good enough for her…

Whip it out when… Pamper night or for thin and delicate skins.
Ingredient list.

De Mamiel – Autumn Face Oil (~100USD)*

De Mamiel formulates oils to be in synergy with nature, each season denotes a new oil to combat the skin crisis that occurs as the weather shifts (that struggle is REAL). A practical consequence, batches differ every season to ensure only the freshest, ripest harvest.

I’m probably too Generation Y for equinox and raiki and inner energy but ya know what? I have so much appreciation for hand blended products. I want to use things that are made with love and not shovelled out by the hundreds.

Quite the tangent! Back to the oil. Autumn Oil is a vast deviation from the stockstandard oil blends on the market, check out this cocktail of botanical miracle workers: honeysuckle to reduce puffiness, carrot oil for antioxidants, Prickly Pear, BoaBoa and the list just goes on! ***

*** – note that essential oils have the potential to cause irritation (as does any ingredient) but I’ve found the Autumn formulation to be abundant in ‘soothing’ botanicals as opposed to aggressive additives.

The consistency is among the thinnest mentioned today and the product absorbs almost instantly so this one could easily transition to a day oil. It’s soothing on irritation (skin and mood) and quenches any dehydration. It’s the bells and the whistles with a cherry on top – if aromatherapy is your poison, this woody masterpiece will be your happy place.

Whip it out when… Life happens and you need some TLC. Also a fancy gift for the busy woman; recuperation in a bottle.
Ingredient list.

Sunday Riley – Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Oil (~120USD)

I’ve finished the deluxe sample size prior to time of writing and it has passed my two months trial period – I will purchase the full size, just preparing myself for price tag horror 😛

Caroline Hirons included Artemis in her 2014 favourites, I love me a bit of Mrs Hirons however her descriptions left me puzzled on two accounts:

– I found it to be thick, not thin in consistency. This is a viscous one, similar to Abyssinian oil. If you’re not keen on thorough massage, press it into the skin.

– It’s not a conventionally pleasant scent. As Hirons notes, there is lemon and lemon bark but all I smell is wheat germ, despite there being no mention of wheat germ in the ingredients. All I know is that the smell isn’t particularly pleasant to my nose.

In terms of performance, Artemis seems to target inflammation – the flush around the my cheeks is lessened and shadowy areas around the mouth (pigmentation?) appears less pronounced. Artemis can be described as a clarifying oil, addressing any summertime congestion on the nose and chin. If your skin could be described as split personality, both dehydrated and congested, this is the one for you.

Whip it out when… Things are looking a bit spotty and angry.
Ingredient list.

A note on application

I apply all face oils to damp skin, using a sweeping motion. This means that I only require two or three drops to cover my entire face and neck, I’m always puzzled when I see people drizzle a handful of oil – I think it’s a waste of product but whatever works for you!

One more thing…

I ordered these in price, or rather, initial investment. They do vary in size so keep that in mind if you’re thinking bang for your buck.

What are your favourite face oils? As I said, can never have too many…

  1. I love the Nude Skincare ProGenius treatment oil. It absorbs quickly and really helps my skin repair itself faster after a blemish & helped me banish flakey skin this winter. It’s only my third oil & favorite so far. Kiehl’s midnight recovery just sat on top of my skin & made me greasy and Clarins Lotus oil made my skin almost stop producing oil totally. Would have been great for me in my 20’s when I was much oilier. I’m getting the Sunday Riley Luna oil next but I feel you on the price tag. Ouch!

  2. I love the Tatcha Beauty Oil for regular night use. Sometimes i’ll just put a drop on my flaky patches under my regular moisturiser. I also love putting a little of this in my hair.
Clarins Santal Face Oil is for when my skin is acting up and I want to indulge. It smells like cardamon, lavender and sandalwood so it puts me right to sleep. It defiantly doesn’t sink right in. It sort of leaves you feeling quite oiled but when you wake up all thats left is calm, very soft skin. TheNonBlond has a great review on it.
I highly recommend the Clarins! There are two other face oils in the range for different skin types (Lotus for oily skin and Blue Orchid for anti-ageing).

  3. Thank you for this Karima!! Again, so informative and eloquent. You’re work is very much enjoyed and appreciated by me!!

  4. Hi, Carima! First comment here πŸ™‚ I love your videos and your personality. Face oils are dear to me. I started using them a year ago and I can’t get enought! (I have combination oily sensitive skin). My first oil is Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery concentrate and this stuff is amazing – the smell, the texture, it absorbs quickly and the 30 ml botlle lasts forever. Then I purchaced The Body shop vitamin E serum and oil thing (after Caroline Hirons wrote about it) and I like it too – it’s a little more heavy and I hate stupid bottle that is peeling. A month ado I purchased just a regular rosehip oil – wanted to try it after hearing so many great reviews.. it’s really yellow and I look strange at first but then it absorbs and at the morning my skin is glowy and so fresh.

  5. I’m using my Pai Rosehip Oil religiously and I don’t want to think about a life without it anytime soon. I haven’t tried other oils except the Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil yet but I definitely will, I just can’t decide which one to pick. Maybe one of Antipodes? Or the Echium Oil from Pai. :/ There are far too many and I’m always picky as my skin reacts to nearly everything that grows and blooms -.-****. That got me in trouble many times, especially when there’s wheat in products.

    1. I wonder how the Pai compares to the Trilogy… Then again, I can justify anything πŸ˜€ Sorry to hear about the sensitive skin, sounds tricky! Maybe stick to the Pai – if it ain’t broken…
      xx

  6. I’m so happy you wrote this, I’ve been searching for a new oil to rotate in with my newest love, Sunday Riley Luna! I, like you, am only 24 and this oil contains retinol and blue Tansy however, I wanted to give it a go after Mrs. Hirrons raved about it. She really has that effect on you, I can definitely see why though. It’s done miracles for my pores, redness and inflammation (plus I think it smells like blueberries and tea *_*). Another great Argan oil I found is the Kahina organic Argan oil, I had wonderful results with it and have been debating whether or not to repurchase! Thank you for such a well thought out and informative review Karima!

  7. Your reviews are so thoughtful and well written that it’s hard to believe you’re so young. The majority of youtubers just throw together sloppy posts on their blogs because it’s not easy. I truly appreciate all the hard work you put into your blog and your videos. The huge amount of people trying to get a successful beauty channel on YouTube has made it nearly impossible for even those who are super talented to make it (case in point: Monika Blunder). But I don’t have a doubt that your hard work and talent will get you a million subscribers in no time. Your charisma is the cherry on top.
I have a question unrelated to this post that I would appreciate you answering. I know you’re not a huge fan of bronzers but I know you’ve tried a few and I not only trust your opinion but I also happen to have your same skin color and olive undertone. I’ve been using the EstΓ©e Lauder goddess bronzer and really like it. But I love finding the best makeup, which is why I love you. While it’s great that so many youtubers do a lot of drugstore or even medium-priced makeup, I love that you look for the very best. I would rather have a few amazing, complex eyeshadows than a lot of okay quality, flat colored eyeshadows. I love anything that’s unique.
So if you could please tell me what is the best bronzer you’ve found. You might consider doing a blog post on bronzers for light skin since I understand why you are not a big fan and this is why it would be helpful to so many who struggle. In fact you should consider doing a blog post on olive skin and makeup. Which colors are flattering and which ones to avoid, foundation tips, etc. There is so little information on light olive skin.

    1. Hey Abir,

Thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it πŸ™‚ Beauty products are my biggest love, I spend much of my day writing memos and jotting down thoughts so I’m glad you find the posts to be thorough and thoughtful!

In terms of bronzers, I adore the Guerlain 4 Seasons line. The pigment is very creamy and it really smoothes skin texture, along with adding a bit of bronze. There are a few shades, here is my review:
      https://shamelessfripperies.com/review/guerlain-terracotta-four-seasons-bronzers-ebony-08-nude-00-moyen-brunettes-05/

If you’re looking for a cooler bronzer (i.e. not orange at all) then I highly recommend the Napoleon Matte Bronze. The texture is not quite as buttery as the Guerlain but the shade is perfect.

      Hope this helps πŸ™‚
      x

  8. Such a great post! I’m new to your blog and Youtube, but I SO enjoy everything I’ve read and watched. Love that you’re articulate and thorough. And you’re not too bad to look at. πŸ™‚ I love face oil! A couple other oils you could try are Marula Oil, which is on the thinner side and sinks in fairly quickly (not as fast as rosehip oil). And Moringa Oil, which is more viscous but sinks in within a minute or so. I really like oils that sink into the skin. Although for night I’m not as picky.

    1. Hey Ruby πŸ™‚
Welcome to the Sham Frip! I’m so thrilled that you’re enjoying it πŸ™‚
I’ll take a look at those oils, sounds like great additions to my ever-growing stash πŸ˜‰
      x

  9. I love the Zazi face oil. It’s a QLD owned company that makes their makeup right here! Their oil is the best I’ve ever tried.

  10. Thanks Karima – REN Omega oil/serum is amazing – I also use the Trilogy you mentioned above and Sunday Riley Juno (gives an amazing glow over night). The REN omega though is by far my fave – fantastic value for money, a little goes a lonnnnggggg way (I think my first bottle lasted a year) and is so nourishing and plumping. I use a wee bit every morning (makeup doesn’t budge). Love oils.

  11. Hi Karima! Thought I’d leave a request here (:
First I have to say that your blog is the very best out there. I love your approach to makeup and skincare <3
What I would like to see are more tutorials similar to "blackened smokey eye" or the drugstore tutorial with the sandwiched highlight in the center. They are so encouraging and makes me want to refine my skills. So more technique-y tutorials please, they are the best!
    Love from Sweden!

  12. Hey Karima, just caved and bought the MV cleanser, rose mist, rose hydrator, rose plus booster and hand cream. We just have such similar taste and skin, that it’s hard for me to resist anything you recommend haha! Plus it’s hard to find a company that will ship to my country. Can’t wait for my goodies to arrive. I do have a question though- do you still use your chemical exfoliants with this skincare, and if so, how do they work into your routine? Thanks bunches! <3 from your neighbor in Papua New Guinea

    1. Hey Deb!

Let me know how you like the skincare when you’ve had a chance to try it πŸ˜€
Good question about the chemical exfoliants. I have very delicate skin, so if I’m removing a balm cleanser with a cloth, I have to limit my chemical exfoliants (I grazed my skin once… ouch).

If your skin isn’t quite as delicate as mine, you might be able to use cloth cleansers and chemical exfoliants simultaneously, see how you go.

      xx

  13. I know argan is all the rage right now, but I just can’t get on that boat. It’s great for hair, but I’ll leave it at that. I personally prefer marula (I’m using one from Acure Organics) for moisture because its natural anti-microbial properties are great for those of us with facial and cartilage piercings. It also blends really well with a touch of the kiehl’s midnight recovery if I’m feeling extra bothered. Peter Thomas Roth’s squalane is also superb if you are feeling oily, but also dehydrated.

  14. You should give the Boots Botanics Facial Oil a go! I was in England recently on a study trip and the cold weather caused my usually oily skin to become dry and flakey! Not to mention the redness that had taken up residence on my cheeks. I bought it on a whim in Canterbury and after one application, the flakey-ness was gone and the redness calmed. It contains 100% organic ingredients including rosehips! Its quite cheap too, around 11 pounds i believe? If you run into it, definitely recommend you to pick it up! Its smell is divine as well! P.s. I adore you Karima, definitely the best blogger i have ever had the pleasure of coming across πŸ™‚

  15. Hi Karima – first I have to say, I love your VDO. I watched your First impression Romantic Rose Makeup last night and I was smiling all the way through …. love your enthusiasm. One of my fav would have to be the Glamorous Neutrals with a POP of Colour Makeup Tutorial …. crazy about that yellow corner. In fact, I wore it yesterday πŸ™‚

OK back to the oil – I visited Sydney recently and got my hand on Black Chicken Remedies, Love Your Face Serum. I’ve been using it for only few weeks but it has been wonderful. It’s 100% natural, no parabens, no petrochemicals, no artificial fragrances, and contains sooooo many oils – Evening Primrose oil, Vitamin E oil, Argan oil, Rosehip oil and gazillion other oils.

Thought you might want to check it out :

    1. Hey Nikki πŸ™‚

Aw thanks! I’m so pleased you liked the tutorials!

I’ll check out that Black Chicken Serum, can’t say I’ve heard of the brand but I love supporting Australian brands πŸ˜€ Thanks for the heads up!

      xx

  16. This comment is so late, I doubt you’ll get to read it but —

Seriously, you really MUST try Suti Rejuvenate Oil. It has a lot of ingredients in common with other oils listed here which you love, but I swear the combination is magic. It’s most similar to your Jacqueline Evans, but a bit of a step up. For me it was life changing, so years after discovering it, I’m still devoted.
My mom (who’s in her 60’s and is a skincare fanatic with all teh retinols and fancy creams) also fell in love with this. After adding Rejuvenate to her routine, even her paramedical esthetician (you know, the people you go to for peels or laser treatments etc. if you want someone really properly trained) was really impressed by the difference it made.

    Ingredients:
Rosa Rubiginosa (Rosehip) Seed Oil*, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil*, Argania (Argan) Spinosa Kernel Oil*, Limonene**, Citrus Reticulata (Tangerine) Peel Oil*, Tocopherol, Santalum Austrocalendonicum (Sandalwood) Wood Oil, Boswelia Carterii (Frankincense)*, Citrus Aurantium Bigaradia (Orange) Flower Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Extract*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil*, Linalool**, Geraniol**, Citral**

    * Certified Organic
** Naturally occurring in essential oils

Β£39 or $60, Handmade in England

I swear I’m not affiliated, though this sounds like an advert – you know me from MUA – proximitythe53rd.

I’m also keen to jump on the Luna bandwagon … still waiting for the UK release!

    1. Ahhh, but I read ALL the comments πŸ˜‰

That oil sounds heavenly! These comments have been catastrophic on my bank balance… So many awesome recommendations! D:

Tick tock still waiting for Luna in Australia :-/ No word yet!

      xx

  17. Hi Karima! Thanks so much for another great post, I just love your blog, you make me smile! I love skincare products and have been experimenting with face oils as well this past year. I have to highly recommend to you both the Tata Harper skincare line, and equally the OdacitΓ© skincare line. They are both Luxe Natural lines, so nothing harmful to be absorbed by the skin. Both lines carry amazing facial oils for different skin needs and they smell absolutely beautiful! Nothing artificial in either of them, all flower and plant essences. On the OdacitΓ© website she has a chart where it is so much fun to read about all the oils and to find which one is just right. I am like a kid in the candy shop, it’s so hard to choose! Check out their websites, I’m sure you will find something you love!

  18. Hi Karima,

I just wanted to ask when do you fit this into your skincare routine? Do you apply this last? I’ve watched your get unready with me video many times and I was wondering if you’ve already changed some of the products or if these oils were the only ones you’ve added. Love your videos and this blog! keep up the good work! πŸ™‚

    <3 Francezca

    1. Hey Francezca!

I apply oil in the evening, after cleansing. I do not follow with an additional moisturiser. My skincare has changed rather significantly since my Get Unready With Me video πŸ™‚ I should do an updated version.

      xx

      1. Yes please! I’d love to see that! And maybe you could also do a morning skincare routine? no pressure though, just a suggestion πŸ˜€

  19. Hi Karima! I’m sorry to bother you (AGAIN) but I also suffer from broken capillaries. Do you know whether there are any proven ways of actually getting rid of them, not just preventing new ones, which doesn’t involve laser treatment? I.e, something I could use at home. Lots of love from Glasgoww xxxx

    1. Hey Carla,

Never a bother πŸ™‚ There isn’t a whole lot that can be done to treat broken capillaries once they’ve formed, sadly. As you said, there is laser to treat and various options to prevent them but as far as I know, there is no miracle treatment to reverse them.

      xx

  20. Woo facial oils! Funny, I was wondering about your thoughts on it. I’ve recently been into oils due to hearing about the wonders of rose hip oil. Tested out the Ole Henkrisen one, but i’m currently using the Origins one which is amazing. I use it for flakiness under makeup. I also recently bought the Clarins Lotus oil like the commenter above as I have extremeeeeeely oily skin and hoping it could get that in control. I have only used it 2 nights so we’ll see.
Maybe i’ll venture into Pai rose hip oil too since that’s available in Canada. x

  21. Hi Karima

A very late post from me, but I just wanted to say I love how intelligent and sophisticated you are – it is refreshing!

I have combination oily skin and applied Kosmea’s rose hip oil religiously every evening until I was discouraged from doing so because of my naturally oily skin. However I agree with you that nothing removes or mixes better with oil than oil!

I’m now hunting around for a good facial oil and I’m thinking about Palmer’s Multi Effect Perfecting Facial Oil that contains a blend of Argan Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Maracuja Oil, Apricot Oil, Rosehip Oil, Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Sesame Oil & Vitamin E – sounds amazeballs and is available at Priceline.

What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts πŸ™‚

    Marzia

      1. Hi Karima

        Thanks so much for replying.

It’s been exactly a month since I’ve been using it and I love it.

Its formula is very light and non-greasy making it easy to apply and massage into your skin (sometimes my super dry fingers absorb the oil before I can apply it to my face!). Fortunately, it doesn’t have a strong scent even though there are so many scenty oils within this product – although I’d have to say the grape seed oil overpowers the others slightly but it is so subtle that I don’t find it bothersome.

I massage the oil into my skin for a good two minutes after cleaning and exfoliating in the evening. In the mornings, my skin feels really nourished and soft, and best of all, I I haven’t had any breakouts or seen any enlarged / clogged pores since I’ve been using this product. I am still not sure if my skin has been “perfected” but I would say my blemishes are fading, and I can confidently walk out the house after cleansing and moisturising alone.

I would definitely recommend it πŸ™‚
        xx

  22. First time commenting πŸ˜€
You should try out the Paula’s Choice RESIST MOISTURE RENEWAL OIL BOOSTER (dat caps!)
it contains all non-fragrant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich plant oils which should work nicely for you because of your redness (I get redness easily too) and it can be combined with moisturizers and serums or used by itself!
also some tips for buying oils:
avoid fragrance, the fact that it smells good is not helping your skin, it’s causing irritation that you might not even notice (doesn’t mean it’s not happening!)
no lemon or grapefruit extracts! the entire family is terribly irritating to the skin. Lemon oil contains numerous fragrance chemicals that make it phototoxic, meaning it can cause a reaction when on skin that’s subsequently exposed to sunlight. Examples of the fragrance chemicals in lemon oil include limonene, bergapten, and oxypeucedanin (Source: Toxicology In Vitro, December 2010, pages 2,084-2,089).
Topical application of grapefruit oil may cause contact dermatitis from its chief fragrance chemical, limonene (Source: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, December 2005, pages 9,790–9,794).
    Lavender is a big no-no here’s why:
Fragrant component of lavender and coriander that can be a potent skin irritant, allergen, or sensitizer once it is exposed to air (Sources: Contact Dermatitis, January 2008, pages 9-14; May 2002, pages 267–272, and June 2005, pages 320–328). Current research indicates that this component of lavender can be cytotoxic (meaning toxic to skin cells) (Source: Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221-229).

I’ll let you know that your rosehip oils are very good for the skin πŸ™‚ evening primrose is also another oil that would be really good!

I know it’s lengthy, but i enjoy you and your videos so much that I couldn’t help myself πŸ™‚

  23. Hi there,

Just hanging the archives but I’ve recently discovered Go To Skin Care (Zoe foster blake’s range) and they have an awesome face oil
Called Face Hero $45AUD. I have dry but also congested skin and it has been great, I’ve found it a bit more moisturising and absorbable than pure rose hip.

Almond oil, jojoba oil, macadamia oil, brazil nut oil, evening primrose oil, buriti oil, arnica oil, rosehip oil, calendula oil, kiwi fruit seed oil, tocopherol (vitamin e), totarol, rosemary leaf extract, natural fragrance (orange blossom & rose gardenia.)
