The fourth and final instalment of the By Terry Rouge Terrybly series, the deeper shades: Carnal Attraction and Bare Instinct.

The Rouge Terrybly collective review can be found here, the red & orange showcase can be found here, for pink looks click here and for paler shades, run along here.

Rouge Terrybly in Carnal Attraction #404

Carnal Attraction can be described as a brightened plum that, when layered, veers into vampy territory. I prefer to wear this one blotted to coax out the brightener fuschia undertones, visible on the perimeters of my terribly messy swatch above. Colour wise, Carnal Attraction is both a unique and versatile choice as it can be worn as a plummy stain, a bolder vamp and everything in between.

It’s hard to me to admit this but: Carnal Attraction has the tendency to appear uneven when hastily applied from the tube (again, visible in the swatches above). I favour the application technique that I mentioned in the Rouge Terrybly collective review: lip brush application and multiple blots to build the colour in layers for a long lasting, stained effect.

Regardless of application, Carnal Attraction has the tendency to stain vertical lip lines rather heavily; I actually love the graduated-stained-lip look but if vertical lip lines are one of your primary concerns, Carnal Attraction will probably piss you off. Liplines aside, Carnal Attraction is very kind to my depleted, textured lips and wears evenly.

And the colour. It’s the sex.

Since vampy lips + subtle pink hues on the eyes are a reoccurring concept on my pinterest boards, I decided to style a more wearable version: muted peachy-pinks on the eyes, a reflective-pinkened tear duct highlight and a rich, stained plum lip.

By Terry Rouge Terrybly Part 4 – Carnal Attraction & Bare Instinct

By Terry – Rouge Terrybly in Carnal Attraction #404 // Blotted for a bright yet rich stain
Makeup Store – Microshadow in Cashmere // A warm, pinky-minky shade. With a delicate peach hue, cashmere strikes me as the perfect name – it’s a cozy sorta colour. Used all over the lid
Makeup Store – Microshadow in Masai // Apparently Makeup Store matte shadows are OUT of this world?! The perfect ashy taupe, used to contour the socket and the cheekbone
Tom Ford – Cream Colour for Eyes in Pink Haze // Sadly limited edition, used around the tear duct for a stronger pink pop
Rouge Bunny Rouge – Highlighting Powder in Goddess // Used on the cheekbones for the softest sheen and a touch of warmth. Such an elegant product, I extend a pat on the back to the RBR chemist

Rouge Terrybly in Bare Instinct #403

Now this is one of the most unique shades in the Rouge Terrybly line; The Black Panties hit the nail on the head – it’s a somewhat ugly swatch, a deepened rosewood shade but it has a hint of warmth that reminds me (her, us) of the inside of a fig. On the lips: a little reddened, a touch cranberry, a bit figgy and totally un-dupe-able.

The formula of this one is gorgeous – like a fragrance, different layers unfold as the day progresses: From a cranberry fig upon application to seven hours later, a warm rose stain remains. Cushiony texture, disguises flakiness and lip lines.

Something about Bare Instinct strikes me as so organic. I preserved that vibe by pairing it with earthy neutrals, casually layering cream eyeshadows for a multitude of nuances.

By Terry – Rouge Terrybly in Bare Instinct #403 // So damn interesting
By Terry – Ombre Blackstar in Brown Perfection // Low shimmer brown, as a base on the eyelid
Chanel – Illusion D’Ombre in Ebloui // A reddened shade layered over the Brown Perfection for another layer of complexity
By Terry – Ombre Blackstar in Bronze Moon // Scribbled on the ball of the eyelid for a foiled finish (not the glamorous sort, more of an effortless glossy effect)
Rouge Bunny Rouge – Long Lasting Eye Pencil in Salome // For the upper tightline, to ground the look and for some sultry depth
Kevyn Aucoin – Sculpting Powder in Medium // A good neutral contour for warmer looks, where overly ashy contours may be jarring

And… that’s the end of my Rouge Terrybly showcase. Thank you for coming along on the ride 🙂 I would like to know: what was your favourite Rouge Terrybly look? Seeking ideas for a tutorial.

Much love, xxkarima

  1. I’ve been wanting to get Bare Instinct for a long time and I think this just pushed me to go get it already. Beautiful looks as usual, Karima. Thanks for all the swatches and detailed reviews of the Rouge Terrybly range. *muackks*

  2. As devoted as I am to orange-y shades Bare Instinct is calling my name. Definitely has an organic wood nymph (?!?!?!?) vibe. Its weird and different but still looks normal. Ugghhhhhhhhh I may have to get it.

  3. Oh. Man. I would never have even looked twice at Bare Instinct from that swatch, but ON?! *shakes fist* Damn you, you magician!

And I have and adore Carnal Instinct, so I basically need all those products you used. For both looks. So my vote is a tutorial of either of these. πŸ™‚

  4. Hi Karima… I’m not sure if I’ve commented on your amazing blog before, but I’ve been a long-time lurker. I absolutely love your looks and particularly your products choices.

I adore the Chanel Illusion D’Ombre colours and have two: Epatant and Abstraction (a light, pretty pink), which I think was limited edition? Do you have Abstraction? It would be great to see a look of yours using that product.

    Christy x

    1. Welcome out of lurkdom πŸ˜€ I’m so glad you like the looks πŸ™‚
I WISH I owned Abstraction, I frequently miss out on limited edition shades because I purchase online and rarely go to counters πŸ™ xx

  5. Love bare instinct on you! I am considering getting the terrybly nude one because of you. Love the way you used the make up studio eyeshadow for cheek contouring.

    1. Try it on in Mecca Cosmetica πŸ™‚ Nudes are very personal. Makeup Store is in Broadway Mirvac shopping centre, it’s such a great/fun store! x

  6. The series was great, thank you Karima for sharing it with us πŸ™‚ As you have already filmed a tutorial using the terrybly nude, I’d love to see -one day, some day- a ‘Cherry Cherry’ tutorial, ohmygawd you looked absolutely ah-mazing on the pic: dramatic, festive, chic… Oh… absolutely love it! It is ex-aequo with the ‘Torrid Rose’ look, so classy and wearable for a night out! The one I also really enjoyed and ‘recreated’ (LOL) was the 21VD look, the winged eyeliner reminds me of a tutorial done by Her Highness the Queen of Makeup Lisa Eldridge MD-PhD :p And with the 21VD lipstick it is so amazing and I actually wear it almost every day at work these days… I just love the By Terry Rouge Terrybly lipsticks! The formula is flawless!

  7. Hi there. You look absolutely lovely, especially with Carnal Attraction. And your skin looks naturally flawless.

Can you share all the products you are wearing there, including foundation and concealer? Pretty please? I’d like to try them…

    1. In the Carnal Attraction look, I’m wearing Armani Lasting Silk 4.5 mixed with Le Blanc De Chanel Sheer illuminating base. I believe the concealer I wore under my eyes was Armani Precision Retouch in 3. I didn’t set with a powder or use any other products. Hope this helps πŸ™‚ x

  8. Red, red, red! How about a glamorous, stronger red lip tutorial (with Frenetic Vermillion, pleaaase) for those days when you are feeling confident. I struggle wearing reds because I too have chapped lips that tend to flake and feel and look even drier after an hour of so when wearing reds… I’m now using Chanel’s Gabrielle but wish it was creamier. Have you tried it? How does it compare to Frenetic Vermillion?
Another tutorial idea… Wouldn’t Bare Instinct be great for a Downton Abbey inspired tutorial?
Looking forward to whatever you decide to do! xxx

  9. I also vote for Torrid Rose!! I am rushing out to buy Carnal Attraction and Torrid Rose right now and possibly Bare Instinct too! I have 4 TerryBly lippies so far so that will bring me to lucky 7!

And one day, I would looove to see a tutorial using Ombre Blackstar products (like your Bare Instinct look). I am interested in application technique for these unique eye shadow textures.

PS – Is that an engagement ring you’re sporting??? pretty! :o)
    xo sj

    1. Many a vote for Torrid Rose! And wow, 7 Rouge Terrybly lipsticks <3 You and I can be the RT spokespeople πŸ˜‰
I'm looking into doing a cream eyeshadow tutorial, I already have like 5 ideas lined up though so it might be a few weeks.
Not an engagement ring, it's a heirloom that my grandmother gave me and it just seems to fit next on that finger πŸ˜€
      xx

  10. All the looks are so well thought out; I love how your unexpected approach to color combinations just…WORKS. You have a gift! I have Carnal Attraction and just purchased Bare Instinct, so a tutorial for either of those would be super helpful for me. I’m thinking Pink Party will be my next purchase…my god she’s a BEAUT! What shade do you have your eye on to pick up next? Or have you gotten all the ones you think are the best?

    1. I do spend a lot of time pondering fun colour combinations πŸ™‚ I’ve found that mostly, if the skin is kept clean and neutral, any colour combination can work. If you like neons, Pink Party is a no brainer! One of my favourites πŸ™‚
I think I had better stop here, so many other lipstick lines to conquer! The remaining shades are reds (I got plenty of those) or brown toned (Bare Instinct is as brown as I go, really). xx

  11. K-K-Karimaaaa! <333

Carnal Attraction reminds me of YSL GS 1. Damn, why are the prettiest vamps always the most high maintenance? I sometimes apply extra layers of the GS in the hopes that the gloss covers up the patchiness. It ends up going horribly wrong!

    1. Lisaaaaa πŸ™‚
Yes it does have a GS1 brightened-yet-vampy vibe πŸ™‚ GS1 is another one that goes patchy on pretty much everyone but I kinda roll with it. It’s a pretty shade nonetheless πŸ™‚ xx

    1. I always mention all colour products, I only omit foundation and such (because it gets repetitive). To answer your question, I’m not wearing any blush, only the Make Up Store Masai to contour the cheekbone. Any colour you see on my cheeks may be my natural flush peeking through. xx

  12. I love love your blog, cannot stop myself from watching your videos.
This makeup is great i tried it upon myself (with different products obviously) and it worked great!
Thank you and keep posting tutorials!
A french make up addict πŸ™‚

  13. You’re probably so over these looks, but I’d still love a tutorial on the Bare Instinct look. I tried to recreate it today and wound up with way too much Brown Perfection, and when I tried to sheer it out, it just looked muddy and ugly. Sigh. Come to NY and do my makeup? πŸ˜‰

    Shani x

    1. That tutorial has been on my to-do list for way too long! Will definitely do it soon, I’ll be ramping up the tutorials and posts in a few months (I’ve organised to slow down other portions of my life to dedicate more time and love to this space). Definitely coming, I promise πŸ™‚
      xx
